This check from The Arizona Bank, is signed in black by the boss of the Bonanno crime family, Joe Bonanno. The check is dated, “5/14/73,” for the amount of, “$33.00.” Joe Bonanno is a Sicilian born, American mob boss who was involved in bootlegging activities and was able to make multiple lucrative real estate investments during the Great Depression. Bonanno though a multi-millionaire early on, avoided much of the typical opulent lifestyle that is associated with gangsters of the time. He also invested in many legal businesses such as owning a funeral home, which helped in more than a few of his illegal operations. His life story was made into a biographical film, titled, Bonanno: A Godfather’s Story starring award winning actor Martin Landau. This check is encapsulated by PSA/DNA 83779374.
