Within a year of Pearl Harbor, Admiral Chester Nimitz oversaw the building and deployment of the greatest fleet to ever sail the seas. He first defeated the Japanese fleet at Guadalcanal, the first time Japan lost a naval engagement. Nimitz ably delegated leadership roles to men who demonstrated their fighting ability and island after island began to fall to the allies. Then came Okinawa and Iwo Jima - it was Admiral Nimitz who orchestrated these last nails in the coffin of Imperial Japan. When the Japanese delegates boarded the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945, it was only fitting that man who built and led the fleet that defeated them be there to sign the document of their surrender. This solemn 11" x 14" image captures the moment Admiral Nimitz, flanked by Douglas MacArthur, Bull Halsey and ring of proud American servicemen, inked his name on the terms of surrender. The Admiral proudly inscribed the bottom border of this print: "To Senator J. Howard McGrath with best wishes and great appreciation C.W. Nimitz, Fleet Admiral, USN". The signature is a tad light in parts but possesses adequate contrast to display wonderfully. The print shows light aging with some rippling to the surface. A stirring piece that captures the greatest moment in American Naval history. Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
