Nearly 40 years ago, Alex Haley’s book, “Roots,” was turned into a nationally-broadcast miniseries, and aroused a new consciousness of African-American history. This lot contains an archive of 18 letters, a telegram and various other documents signed by Haley (mostly signed “Alex”) in correspondence with a young assistant who was also a personal friend. Included in this amazing assortment is a rewrite draft of Chapter 2 of “Roots,” which has material that did not make it into the final publication, as well as a copy of Haley’s previous work, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X,” which is personalized by the author. Though he passed in 1992, Haley’s works continue to hold an important place in American literature and history. This archive includes JSA Auction LOA.
