Passenger aboard the Mayflower and founding settler of the town of Duxbury, Massachusetts, Myles Standish was an English Military officer hired by the Pilgrims of Plymouth County as a Military advisor who assisted in the defense of the county and initiated early raids on Native American communities. This historic parchment/document is signed by a later member of the Standish family of Duxbury, Lancashire containing the signature of “Rd Standish,” on the reverse side of a fold at the bottom of the 10.5” x 13.25” page. Richard Standish (1620 – 1662) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from Preston from 1659-1660 and according to the University Companies description sheet was very possibly a descendant of Myles Standish. This marvelously attractive document dated 1647 is an agreement between Richard Standish “of Duxbury in the County of Lancashire” granting Anthony Foxcroft of Halifax, York and Robert Somers an annuity of L250 “going out of all those in his Mannors [sic] or Lordships of Duxbury...” The document remains in fine condition and contains a still intact ornate seal affixed by a strip of vellum at the bottom center.
