Besides being a Hall of Fame shortstop Pee Wee Reese will always be remembered for his making Jackie Robinson feel welcome as a Brooklyn Dodger. During Robinson's first year in the majors, Reese was already a respected veteran and being a product of the segregated South, didn't have to do anything to help Jackie. But that's not who Pee Wee Reese was. His simple gesture of putting his arm around Robinson during a game in Cincinnati did more for race relations than a thousand speeches or marches. In that moment Reese silently told the nation that African Americans were accepted in Major League Baseball. As this award shows, Reese was recognized as early as 1962 for his courage and leadership during the integration of the game. The Touchdown Club of Columbus honored the Dodgers Captain with this silver platter award engraved with "For Outstanding Contribution to Baseball". The silver plate measures 13" in diameter and shows light scuffing from age and some tarnishing. A very impressive award recognizing how Pee Wee Reese's acts of integrity made baseball truly "America's Game". Comes with LOA from the Pee Wee Reese Family.
