This archive contains front page or entire sports sections reporting some of the biggest moments in baseball history. Dating from 1933 up to 1961, this group of 8 pieces are culled from the San Francisco Call Bulletin or the Los Angeles Times or Examiner. To kick off this unique time machine is a laminated page from the July 27, 1933 Call Bulletin reporting the end of "DeMaggio's" 61 game hitting streak. Eight years before he set the Major League record for hitting safely in consecutive games, DiMaggio (often misspelled with an "e" in his early days) set the professional baseball record when he hit in 61 straight games. A May 2, 1939 Call Bulletin sports page reports that Gehrig benches himself "for the good of the club" and then reports that his replacement, local boy Babe Dahlgren, hits a home run! The July 17, 1941 Call Bulletin features photos and articles on DiMaggio's hitting streak of 56 consecutive games and how Bob Feller was slated to pitch the following day. While the July 18th paper reports how Ken Keltner's two dazzling catches did indeed stop DiMaggio's streak. The front page of the October 3, 1951 Call Bulletin has the 2" tall headline "GIANT HOMER WINS FLAG" with a photo of Bobby Thomson being greeted by his teammates at home plate. The May 1, 1961 sports page of the LA Examiner records Willie Mays' record-tying four home runs in a single game. An LA Times sports section from September 27, 1961 proclaims "Maris 'Ties' Babe's Mark with No. 60*" and discusses how the home run came four games "late" due to the modern 162 game season and employs the dreaded "*" in the headline. The October 2 edition of the Times then celebrates Maris' 61st home run, this time giving him his due and without mention of the longer season. The pieces are complete though the edges are slightly brittle with toning from age. Some have perforation holes on the left edge where they were once bound in an archive volume. A unique firsthand look at how the major events in baseball history were originally reported.
