This is an original invite card made by General Ulysses s. Grant and his wife to attend a dinner at their home. The 5 X 3 card printed in elegant script reads: “General & Mrs. Grant, At Home, Wednesday evenings. Jany. 9th & 23rd & Feby. 6th.” As was the formal custom of the day, the card also refers to “Dancing,” in the lower left. Considered one of the most masterful generals in American History, if not World History, Grant led the Union Army to victory in the Civil War and accepted General Robert E. Lee's surrender of the Confederate Army at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The circa 1860’s card predates his Grant’s two-term Presidency which began in 1869.
