When MTV first hit the air in 1981, music videos were quite simple. Usually a performance video, the productions lacked imagination or story. In 1983, Michael Jackson changed that, releasing 3 music videos from his smash album Thriller. And if the first 2 videos, for “Billie Jean” and “Beat It”, were groundbreaking, M.J.’s video for “Thriller” was game-changing. In 1984, at the First MTV Video Music Awards, Jackson received 3 VMA’s, for Best Overall Performance, Best Choreography and Viewer’s Choice. This MTV Moonman is the 1983-1984 VMA awarded to Michael Jackson for best choreography in a video. The statue stands 12 ½” tall, and depicts a silver astronaut standing on a silver MTV logo, planting an MTV flag into the logo. Moonman stands on a black circular base, rimmed with silver on the bottom, and fronted with a plaque that reads “Video Music Award * 1983-1984 * Best Choreography In A Video* Michael Jackson”, next to the MTV logo. Base shows some wear. Originally sold at auction as part of Michael Jackson auction in 2011 for $60,000.
