The New York Yankees have retired #8 for two players, Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra. Both players were catchers for the Yankees, and they played together for one season, 1946.
Berra is one of the most famous baseball players of his generation, known for his popular sayings known as Yogi-isms. He played 19 seasons in the Majors and was named an All-Star in 18 of those seasons. He won 10 World Series for the Yankees and three individual AL MVP Awards. Berra was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972, his second year of eligibility. Bill Dickey was an excellent player for the Yankees in the 1930’s, making 11 All-Star teams. He was a consistent hitter who ended his career with a stellar .313 batting average.
