The New York Yankees moved into their new home in 1923, after sharing a residence with the New York Giants of the National League starting in 1913. They won the pennant in their first year in Yankee Stadium, thanks to the incredible performance of their star slugger Babe Ruth. Ruth hit an astounding .393 with 41 home runs and 130 as he won the only MVP award of his career. Pitchers Bullet Joe Bush, Waite Hoyt, Sad Sam Jones, and Herb Pennock all had tremendous seasons, pitching the Yankees to a 98-54 record.
In 1923, with a stadium to call their own, the Yankees faced the New York Giants in the World Series. This was a rematch of the previous two World Series, both of which were claimed by the National League team from New York. To start off the 1923 Fall Classic, the Giants stole two victories in Yankee Stadium, while the Yankees took Game 3 in a visit to the Polo Grounds. The rest of the World Series was a precursor to the Yankees dominance of the modern era of baseball, as the Bronx Bombers reeled off three consecutive victories to claim the first of their MLB-record 27 World Series championships. Babe Ruth opened the scoring in the sixth game, a 6-4 Yankee victory, with his third home run of the World Series. Although the Giants jumped out to a 4-1 lead, two RBI walks and a three-run single from Bob Meusel in the eighth inning delivered the Yankees to a championship.
This ticket is from Game 5, a decisive 8-1 Yankee victory. Demand for this game, held at Yankee Stadium, was so great that up to 50,000 New Yorkers were turned away from the gates and forced to listen to the game on the radio. 62,817 baseball fans were lucky enough to see this game, which featured three RBI nights for Yankee stars Bob Meusel and Joe Dugan. Meusel opened the scoring with a two RBI triple in the first inning, while Dugan knocked in his three RBI with an inside-the-park home run in the second. He finished the game 4-5 with the three RBI and three more runs scored. The Babe went 1-4 in this game, scoring two runs and reaching base on a walk.
Giants starter Jack Bentley was chased after only one and a third innings, the victim of the Yankees early outburst. Bullet Joe Bush took the hill for the Yankees, turning in a polar opposite performance than his counterpart threw. Bush went all nine innings, allowing only three hits. The single run scored against Bush came on a Casey Stengel fielder’s choice groundout that scored Irish Meusel, the elder brother of Bob. This win put the Yankees one step closer to winning their first ever Fall Classic. This offered full ticket from Game 5 has been encapsulated and graded a GOOD 2 by PSA/DNA (26713167).
