Uruguay captain and center back Jose Nasazzi was awarded this medal by Montevidean soccer club Artigas after leading Uruguay to the inaugural FIFA World Cup title in 1930. Nasazzi, retroactively named the best player of the tournament by FIFA, is one of Uruguay’s most decorated players and a true sporting icon in the South American country. This medal was presented to “El Gran Mariscal” by the young club Artigas, founded three years before in 1927 in Montevideo’s La Teja neighborhood. The club was named after José Gervasio Artigas, a Uruguayan national hero of the 18th and 19th centuries. One side of this offered silver medal features a soccer scene etched in high-relief, while the reverse side shows a high-relief etching that reads “‘Artigas F.C.’ / Colegio Pio / Jose Nasazzi / Villa Colon / 1830-1930”. This medal is in excellent condition.
