Winter 2014 Auction Closing Feb 7

Offered is a Government Post Card (GPC) signed by Lou Gehrig. This autograph medium was very popular back in the day, since the item had a postmark date, and are extremely popular today with collectors for the same exact reason. Sometime early in the 1938 season, a young boy named Chas Breese from Toledo, OH sent his hero a request for an autograph. This was a time when Gehrig was slowly disintegrating from the dreaded disease which would eventually take his life. Based upon the bold postmark, on "May 7, 1938" this GPC was returned to young Mr. Breese with a bold pencil "Best Wishes Chas Lou Gehrig" inscription and signature. In addition, the handwritten address was also penned (penciled?) in Gehrig's own hand. The card itself has multiple creases, and while they transverse through the signature, it does not affect the boldness of what Gehrig authored. The blank side also has a handwritten "1938" in the lower left corner and what we presume to be young Chas' handwriting, a scripted pencil "Lou Gehrig auttograph (sic)" title in the upper right hand corner. By the way, on May 7, 1938, Gehrig was 3-5, with two runs scored, a triple and two RBI. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication, cert number X80218.
