There are plenty of reasons for Yankees icon Joe DiMaggio and pitcher Frank Shea to be expressing joyous emotion in this approximately 7x9-inch original wire photo taken after New York’s Game 5 win over the Brooklyn Dodgers of the 1947 World Series. Shea, a rookie, tossed a complete game while also knocking in a run to help the Yankees to a 3-2 series lead. DiMaggio belted his second home run of the series in the fifth inning off Rex Barney to give the Yanks a much-needed insurance run. This photo captures the jubilation of the two Game 5 stars in the locker room postgame. Shea is holding a baseball with a wide smile on his face while DiMaggio has his arm around the pitcher and looks to be leaning in to give the rookie a kiss on the cheek. Both players signed the photo in bold, blue Sharpie. The back of the image features an original caption plate that reads on three lines, “October 4, 1947-” “ 5th Game of World Series” and “Ebbets Field, Brooklyn” Below is the photographer’s image caption that states, “Frank Shea (left), rookie pitcher and winner over the Brooklyn Dodgers, 2-1. Joe DiMaggio (right) hit his second home run of the series.” The photograph is in ideal condition, with some occasional crazing, but no creases. The photo comes with a full PSA LOA.
