Ty Cobb, a man considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time, has signed this Special League baseball. The longtime Detroit Tigers star debuted in 1905, and over the next 24 seasons accumulated a then-record 4,189 hits. Cobb holds the highest career batting average in baseball history, with a mark of .366, and won an astonishing 12 American League batting titles. Cobb hit over .400 three times, with his .420 batting average in 1911 earning Cobb the vaunted Chalmers Award. Cobb played until 1928, and he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a part of its inaugural class of 1936. Cobb earned the most votes of anyone on the ballot that year, finding his name on 222 of the 226 ballots cast. Cobb has signed this vintage baseball on the panel to the south of the sweet spot. “The Georgia Peach” used a black steel-tip fountain pen to delicately pen his signature on the side panel, adding a simple flourish beneath his iconic signature, along with the inscription “12/30/60”, which is less than seven months before his passing.
