When an elbow injury sidelined Joe Montana for almost 2 seasons, back-up Steve Young was tapped to fill the star’s cleats. By the time Montana was able to play again, Young had established himself as a star in his own right. A “quarterback controversy” broke out culminating in 49ers deciding Montana was at the end of his career and traded him to Kansas City. Now with something to prove and revitalized by the change in scenery Montana came back to lead the Chiefs to the 1993 playoffs. But what NFL fans wanted to see was a Montana-Young showdown. On September 11, 1994 that wish was granted when the 2 men met in San Francisco for what Sports Illustrated called “The Vindication Bowl”. Montana and his new team beat his former understudy 24-17. The 38 year-old Montana passed for 203 yards and two touchdowns as he proved to the 49ers and the world that he was far from finished. The Hall of Fame-bound quarterback went on to take the Chiefs to the playoffs for the second consecutive year before retiring. Joe Montana deemed this single victory so important that he put his Kansas City Chiefs road jersey he wore that day aside. This is that special jersey. The front of this bright red jersey has the special patch commemorating the Chiefs 35th anniversary on the left breast and the right side has the NFL 75th anniversary patch. The NFL shield is sewn at the bottom of the V-neck. Montana’s number “19” in white and yellow tackle twill appears on both sleeves, front and back of the jersey. The back features “MONTANA” in white and yellow tackle twill on a red nameplate. Wilson tagging on the lower right front tail and addition size”40” and white strip tag with the year “94”. In acknowledgment of how special this game was to him, Joe has signed both sides of the jersey with different inscriptions. The front has been signed on the “9” and reads 1994 GAME JERSEY 9-11-94 KC 24 - SF 17”. The back has his signature on the “1” and “MY GAME WORN JERSEY 9-11-94 KC 24 SF 17 19-31 PASSING 203 YDS. 2 TD’s” on the “9”. This is a beautifully preserved jersey from one of the most important games in Joe Montana’s storied career. Signed letter of authenticity from Joe Montana. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
