Lot #9: 1995 Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Championship Lombardi Trophy - Erik Williams (Williams LOA)

Description

How integral was offensive tackle Erik Williams to the 1990s Dallas dynasty? With "Big E," the Cowboys won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1992 and 1993, and got off to a hot 6-1 start in 1994 that spelled Three-peat. Then came Williams' infamous car wreck. The 'Boys subsequently dropped a few close contests and fell to the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. Williams returned the following season—bingo, Super Bowl championship number three. According to Troy Aikman, Erik was the NFL's single best offensive lineman before the crash and was on the fast track to Canton. But he wasn't quite the same after '94, and it turned out to be fellow "Great Wall of Dallas" member Larry Allen who made it into the Hall of Fame instead.

Nevertheless, Williams will always be remembered as one of the fiercest, nastiest, most aggressive competitors at his position—not to mention perhaps the only man who could completely shut down Reggie White, dominating the legend both physically and mentally. Offered here is Erik Williams' personal 1995 Lombardi Trophy from Super Bowl XXX. Standing 16 inches tall and showing only minor overall surface wear, it is the most significant such example to surface at auction since teammate Larry Brown's Super Bowl XXX Lombardi Trophy was sold for almost $25,000 in 2003. The front panel features a raised NFL logo and the text, "VINCE LOMBARDI TROPHY / SUPER BOWL XXX CHAMPIONS / THE DALLAS COWBOYS," while the side panel reads, "ERIK WILLIAMS / 79." Williams' accompanying 2015 signed LOA states, "I certify that this is my original and one and only Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl XXX Championship Trophy. It was awarded to me for being a part of the 3rd of three Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl championship teams of the 1990s."
