Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Hall of Famer, and a scarcer "High Number" entry. Among more than 480 copies recorded in PSA’s census reporting, just eight examples have received a higher, unqualified assessment. Presented is Hoyt Wilhelm's much-coveted rookie card. In 1952, Wilhelm led the League in game appearances (71), winning percentage (.833), and ERA (2.43), and posted a 15-3 record for the New York Giants. This was the highest "wins" total the relief pitcher would ever record in a single season, but he more than compensated with a career saves total of 227. He was in solid contention for Rookie of The Year in 1952, but Joe Black took Brooklyn to the World Series and the sportswriters gave a favored Dodger the award. Black's career turned out to be a short-lived one, but Wilhelm pitched for 21 seasons and earned election to the Baseball Hall of Fame. This special Wilhelm collectible possesses an essentially pack-fresh appearance, with tremendous color and gloss. Near Mint to Mint condition.
