For many baseball fans, Ted Williams is simply the greatest hitter who ever lived. A first-ballot Hall of Famer, Williams amassed one of the most impressive statistical resumes in major league history over 19 seasons, all with the Boston Red Sox. In addition to his 521 career home runs, The Splendid Splinter won 6 American League batting titles, 2 American League MVP awards, was named an All-Star 17 times, and won 2 triple crowns for leading the league in batting average, home runs and runs batted in. His .406 batting average in 1941 remains the last time anyone has batted over .400 in a season. Perhaps most impressive is that Williams’ playing career was interrupted twice for military service, first in World War II, and again during the Korean War. Teddy Ballgame passed away in 2002, leaving a unique baseball legacy that has yet to be matched.
