In route to becoming a 5-time All-Star, Frank White’s offensive power increased over the years with White hitting 22 home runs in both 1985 and 1986. Given the 1985 World Series was played without the designated hitter, White hit cleanup in that series, in place of Hal McRae. Prior to White hitting cleanup, the only other second baseman to hit cleanup in a World Series was Jackie Robinson. However, despite his offensive achievements, White was known even more for his fielding abilities as evidenced in his winning the Gold Glove Award eight times, including six consecutive seasons from 1977 to 1982.
Frank White used this fielding glove during his streak of six consecutive Gold Gloves seasons. According the PSA/DNA LOA, it is a Rawlings model XPGS leather glove. It is constructed of Rawlings top grade “Heart of the Hide” steer hide with rawhide laces. The glove features a conventional back with a fleece lined wrist strap, a solid cross-laced anchor web and a ‘Deep Well Pocket.’ A white on red embroidered Rawlings circle ‘R’ logo is on the top of the thumb and a white on red embroidered Rawlings label is on the wrist strap.
The glove also includes a signed LOA from Frank White himself. White states in his letter, “I believe I used this glove during the period that I won six consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 1977 to 1982. As you can see, I used this glove frequently as evidenced by the extensive wear below the index and middle finger area on the inside of the glove. My uniform number, #20, was also written on the glove when I used it so it would be easily identified as mine. I have also signed and inscribed the glove with my name and “Gold Glove 1977” in black sharpie. You will notice the ink from my signature and inscription is currently bolder than the vintage #20 that was written on the glove during my playing years.”
