Although he is most commonly associated with the “Bronx Zoo” era New York Yankees where his World Series home run heroics earned his “Mr. October” moniker, Reggie Jackson actually spent twice as much time with the Oakland Athletics and was drafted by the team when the franchise was still in Kansas City. Jackson wore this remarkable 1960s American Baseball Cap Company Kansas City Athletics batting helmet during his debut season of 1967. It is an extremely rare item. Jackson hit the first of his astounding 563 home runs off California Angels pitcher Jim Weaver on September 17, 1967 three months after his big league debut on June 7, beginning the 1967 campaign with the Athletics Arizona Instructional League team. This well-worn period piece displays evidence of extensive use, green plastic helmet without ear-flap has the team’s interlocking white KC logo is painted on its front crown and is markedly scratched and scuffed over numerous coats of green and yellow paint. Brown leather covered foam padding rings the helmet’s interior head band with a circular piece of foam padding adhered at the inside top. Size “7 ¼” is written on the inside in black marker. Manufacturer’s labels have been removed or worn off where adhesive markings remain on the interior. Jackson signed the helmet in bold black sharpie on its exterior bill with “My Best” “44” “Mr. October” and “My KC Gamer 1967” inscriptions and the helmet comes with JSA LOA certification #Y39626 and a LOA from JT Sports.
