The only World Heavyweight Champion to retire with an undefeated or untied record, Rocky Marciano was a well-rounded athlete whose first love was baseball. In fact before he became a professional boxer Marciano journeyed from his home in Brockton, Mass. To Fayetteville, North Carolina for a spring training tryout with a Chicago Cubs minor league team. He was told that the right arm that he used to knock out so many fighters wasn’t actually strong enough for him to make the minor league squad at his desired position of catcher. Marciano signed this Regulation League baseball in blue ball point pen on a side panel with a “Ward August 6, 1956” inscription just three months after retiring from boxing with a perfect 49-0 record.
