This standard government postcard bears the unmistakable signature of Lou Gehrig. That coveted signature alone is usually the selling point, however, if you look closely, this ordinary post card tells a bigger story. The postmark right above Lou's signature tells us it was mailed from the Bronx and is stamped 1:30 pm August 4, 1937. Less than an hour after Lou dropped this card in the mail he was on the field at Yankee Stadium facing the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox had been battling with the much stronger Yankees all summer for first place. When the Sox rolled into the Bronx earlier that week there was hope that a successful series would propel them to their first pennant since 1919. Those hopes were quickly dashed by Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. After whipping the White Sox the first two games, the third game on August 4th was a slugfest. Lou went 2 for 4 with a home run and 4 RBI but after 8 the game was locked up at 8-8. Then the Yankees proved they were the better team when a series of scratch hits pushed the winning run across the plate in the bottom of the 9th. Yes, this is a Lou Gehrig signed postcard, but when you look closer, it's so much more. The 3 1/4" x 5 1/2" government postcard has been signed "Best Wishes Charles" in strong pencil. The last part of "Charles" was been smudged but Lou's signature is crisp and bold. Encapsulated and graded Authentic by PSA/DNA.
