Seven years after his playing days were over and six years before his death, Babe Ruth wrote and signed this check (#5229) dated December 2, 1942 drawn from his account at the Chemical Bank & Trust Company payable to the order of H [Hyman] Rothstein in the amount of $78.77. All of the writing on the front of the 8.25” x 3” check is in Ruth’s hand in black steel tip fountain pen ink. A notation on the back of the check also written in Ruth’s hand reads: “full bill up to date from Empire Food Market” above Rothstein’s signed endorsement also in steel tip fountain pen. Check is encapsulated and graded authentic by PSA/DNA certification #83220692.
