Before he was the “Say Hey Kid, Willie Mays made his Major League debut with the New York Giants on May 25, 1951 at Shibe Park in Philadelphia, where he wore number 14 and batted third in the lineup. He would finish the day going 0-5 and actually would start his career hitless in 23 at-bats. Despite his slow start, Mays would end up capturing the Rookie of the Year award. This official score card is from the first day Mays donned a Giants uniform. The score card shows Phillies manager Eddie Sawyer on the cover with his left hand on hip and his right hand pointing while being surrounded by his Phillies. “Phillies” appear on the top right while “1951 OFFICIAL SCORE CARD 10 c” is in white letters on a red background at the bottom. The price of this score card in 1951 was 10 cents. The scorecard is completely filled out as Mays’ was handwritten in pencil batting in the third spot. This multi-page score card is in good condition but does appear to have some water damage.
