The numbers on Mickey Mantle are impressive: 18 seasons with the New York Yankees, 536 home runs, 1,509 RBI, .298 career BA, 16 all-star selections, 3 MVP Awards. But the most important number in Mantle’s career is the one he wore on his back, #7. Coincidentally, Mantle won 7 World Series rings with the Yankees, and his #7 was retired by the team in 1969 following his own retirement from the game. This photograph of Mickey Mantle wearing #6 was taken after his initial call-up by the Yankees in 1951. The team had originally assigned Mick #6, to signify his spot as the next great Yankee, after #3 Ruth, #4 Gehrig and #5 DiMaggio. After slumping and being sent back to the minors, Mantle was re-called in August, at which time he was given the #7. This cut, signed by Mickey Mantle, comes encased in hard plastic, and is certified by PSA/DNA. It is accompanied by this unique B&W picture, approximately 7 ½” by 7 ¾”, which appears to be printed on solid paper stock.
