Famed American literary icon, Mark Twain has signed and inscribed “Truly Yours Mark Twain, Venice, May 16, 1898,” in black fountain pen, below his image on this stunning original cabinet photograph published by the Austrian photograph studio identified on the verso. This is among the nicest signatures of Twain, whose birth name was Samuel L. Clemens, that we have ever seen and is especially noteworthy of having been signed during his tenure in Austria where Twain traveled to tend to his health and arrange for his daughter Clara to study piano under Theodore Leschetizky whose school was considered one of the most eminent private piano schools in the world. Clemens adopted Twain as his pen name, from a term associated with the measurement of water depth on riverboats like those he spent so much time traveling, piloting and writing about along the Mississippi. His classics like, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn" are required reading more than 100 years following his death. The photo measures 4 x 6 1/4 inches matted in a 14 1/2 x 17 inch frame. Item comes with a LOA from JSA.
