Physicist and mathematics genius, Dr. Albert Einstein has signed this letter “A. Einstein,” typed in German on his personal stationary dated June 25, 1935 from his Old Lyme, Connecticut address where he spent his summer that year. The recipient of the letter has typed its’ translation below Einstein’s signature which reads, “Dear Robert Reilly: Gladly would I accept your friendly invitation. As I have received many invitations otherwise there remains nothing for me but to stay at home, and from here send you my friendly greetings…” Humorous newspaper accounts this summer suggest Einstein did more than stay at home, confirming that despite not knowing how to swim, he was an avid but not very good sailor, often losing direction and running aground while sailing. One such newspaper headline read, “Einstein’s Miscalculation Leaves Him Stuck On Bar Of Lower Connecticut River.” Einstein calculations on land are unrivaled in history however, as he ranks with Galileo and Newton as one of the great conceptual revisors of man’s understanding of the universe. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921. In 1933 Einstein renounced his German citizenship when he moved to the United States. His warnings of Germany's atomic endeavors led to the Manhattan Project and the creation of the atomic bomb that ended World War II. Vintage framed with a picture of Einstein and the letter’s original mailing envelope. 15.5 X 12.5. LOA from JSA.
