This is a wonderful and crisp news service 8" x 10" photograph of the great inventor, showing him speaking at the welcoming ceremonies for an Edison technical school scholarship competition. With Thomas Edison on this occasion was the great industrialist, Henry Ford. As noted on the picture’s attached caption block, Edison reveled in the opportunity to address the young contestants, and this meeting on July 30, 1930 was the first time Ford had joined him for the festivities. In the field at the image’s bottom-center, the item is signed, “Thos. A. Edison.” Edison's fountain pen signature exhibits his famous "umbrella 'T'," and is ideally situated. A clear, gorgeous likeness! Edison was a man of many inventions. He perfected the phonograph, streetlights, the motion picture camera and much more. Later in life, he worked on a multitude of experiments for the government relating to national defense. Edison was awarded 1,368 separate and distinct patents in his lifetime. He passed away at age 84 on October 18, 1931 - on the anniversary of his invention of the incandescent bulb. LOA from JSA.
